The charismatic movement has made important contributions to church renewal, but certain extreme branches have seriously departed from biblical orthodoxy. Extremes requiring discernment include: (1) 'Prosperity theology' (health-and-wealth gospel) claiming sufficient faith guarantees health and wealth; (2) the New Apostolic Reformation (NAR) claiming contemporary apostles with authority equal to the original apostles who can receive new revelation; (3) uncontrolled 'Spirit manifestations' like 'holy laughter,' animal sounds, and 'slaying in the Spirit.' John MacArthur in 'Strange Fire' sharply critiques these phenomena as lacking biblical support. Michael Brown, writing from within the charismatic tradition in 'Playing with Holy Fire,' also acknowledges serious deviations requiring correction. Biblically, prosperity theology directly contradicts Jesus' teachings on the cross and suffering (Matt 16:24; Phil 1:29) — Paul and the apostles' lives are the best counter-evidence. On new apostles, Ephesians 2:20 positions apostles and prophets as the church's 'foundation,' not an ongoing office; Jude 3's faith 'once for all delivered to the saints' indicates revelation's completeness. On extreme phenomena, 1 Corinthians 14:33 ('God is not a God of confusion') and 14:40 ('all things should be done decently and in order') set clear standards. Sam Storms reminds us that discernment is not quenching the Spirit (1 Thess 5:19) but 'testing everything' (1 Thess 5:21) — maintaining biblical balance between openness and caution.
