The Justice of Hell: How Can a Loving God Punish Eternally?

Core Argument

The doctrine of hell is one of Christianity's most disturbing and most misunderstood teachings. Yet upon deeper reflection, it proves to be an expression of God's justice, holiness, and respect for human agency. First, sin's severity depends not only on the act itself but on the one offended. Offending a colleague and offending a president carry different consequences—not because the act differs, but because of the offended party's status. Sin offends an infinitely holy, infinitely glorious God, so its severity is infinite. Jonathan Edwards argued in 'Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God' that offense against an infinite being merits infinite punishment. Reformed theologian D.A. Carson notes in The Difficult Doctrine of the Love of God that moderns often reduce God's love to sentimental warmth, ignoring Scripture's complex portrait—covenant love, justice-love, and electing love. A truly just judge cannot overlook evil. If God gave Hitler's atrocities and Mother Teresa's service the exact same final outcome, that God would be unjust. More profoundly, C.S. Lewis offers a deep insight in The Problem of Pain and The Great Divorce: hell is, in a sense, the result of human choice. Hell isn't a torture chamber God drags people into, but the final state of those who persistently reject God. Lewis wrote: 'The doors of hell are locked on the inside.' God respects human free choice—if someone spends their entire life rejecting God and refusing repentance, God will not force them into heaven, because for someone who hates God, being eternally with God would be the real hell.
