The claim that 'religion causes wars' is popular but cannot withstand rigorous historical scrutiny. Charles Phillips and Alan Axelrod's Encyclopedia of Wars catalogs 1,763 major conflicts, of which only about 7% were primarily motivated by religion. The 20th century's deadliest regimes—Stalin's Soviet Union, Mao's China, Pol Pot's Cambodia—were explicitly anti-religious atheistic states, with combined victims exceeding 100 million. Theologian David Bentley Hart argues in Atheist Delusions that the 'religious violence' narrative frequently conflates political, economic, and ethnic factors. The actual drivers of the Crusades and Wars of Religion were far more complex than 'religious fanaticism'—land disputes, royal expansion, and economic interests were central. William Cavanaugh in The Myth of Religious Violence argues that the very concept of 'religious violence' is a narrative constructed by modern secular nation-states to monopolize legitimate violence. In fact, Christian faith has been one of history's most powerful forces for peace. The abolition of slavery (Wilberforce), the civil rights movement (Martin Luther King Jr.), South African reconciliation (Archbishop Tutu), modern hospitals and universities—all flow directly from Christian teachings on human dignity and love. Jesus explicitly taught 'love your enemies' (Matthew 5:44), a revolutionary ethical breakthrough. Violence done in Christianity's name is precisely a betrayal of Christ's teaching, not obedience to it.
