The Internal Consistency of the Bible
Core Argument
The Bible was written by approximately 40 different authors over 1,500+ years, from vastly different cultural backgrounds and social strata—kings (David, Solomon), shepherds (Amos), fishermen (Peter), scholars (Paul), tax collectors (Matthew), physicians (Luke). They wrote in three languages (Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek), across three continents (Asia, Africa, Europe), employing diverse genres (history, poetry, prophecy, epistles, apocalyptic). Yet these 66 books display remarkable thematic unity. This unity is not superficial but deeply theological. From Genesis to Revelation, Scripture tells one coherent redemptive narrative: creation, fall, promise, redemption, consummation. The Old Testament points to a coming Redeemer; the New Testament proclaims that Redeemer is Jesus Christ. Scholar Graeme Goldsworthy in Gospel and Wisdom demonstrates how biblical theology forms a Christ-centered organic whole. Consider: if we collected writings from 40 authors across different eras and cultures on any controversial topic (politics, ethics, religion), the result would almost certainly be a contradictory hodgepodge. Yet the Bible not only avoids chaos but displays progressive revelation—later authors deepen and develop earlier themes rather than overthrowing them. As Norman Geisler argues in Systematic Theology, the Bible's unity is best explained by one ultimate Author guiding the entire process.
