Sola Scriptura: Why the Bible Alone is the Final Authority
Core Argument
Sola Scriptura is a core Reformation principle: Scripture is the ultimate authority for faith and practice. This doesn't mean Scripture is the only knowledge source (that's Nuda Scriptura) but that in faith and doctrinal disputes, Scripture holds supreme and final adjudicating authority. Church tradition, creeds, and personal experience have value but must be tested and corrected by Scripture. This principle is especially vital when confronting heresies and cults. Heresies share the common feature of adding or substituting authority sources beyond Scripture: Mormonism adds the Book of Mormon, Eastern Lightning adds new 'words of God,' JWs rely on Watchtower interpretations. When an organization claims authority surpassing Scripture, it opens the door to doctrinal deviation. History's worst church errors — like medieval indulgence sales — arose precisely from placing church tradition above Scripture's authority. Luther, returning to Scripture itself, discovered the Gospel truth: 'The righteous shall live by faith' (Romans 1:17). Sola Scriptura protects the church from human tradition's corruption. Sola Scriptura's substance was already deeply rooted in the early church. Augustine explicitly placed only canonical Scripture in the highest, unquestionable authority position. Irenaeus, opposing Gnostic heresies, consistently appealed to the apostolic Scriptures as the truth standard. This was not Luther's invention but a return to apostolic tradition.
