The Explosive Growth of the Early Church

Core Argument

The rapid spread of early Christianity is a remarkable historical phenomenon. Sociologist Rodney Stark in 'The Rise of Christianity' used rigorous sociological methods to calculate that Christianity grew at ~40% per decade, from about 1,000 believers in 40 CE to roughly 34 million by 350 CE — a growth rate unprecedented in the ancient world. This growth was unique in three ways. First, Christianity originated from society's margins — Jesus was a carpenter's son from Galilee, his followers were fishermen and tax collectors, with zero political or elite support. Historian Michael Grant notes: "Christianity's social origins make its success even more shocking." Second, Christianity grew in hostile environments. From Nero (64 CE) onward, Christians faced imprisonment, exile, and execution, yet persecution fueled rather than hindered growth. Tertullian wrote: 'The blood of martyrs is the seed of the church.' Third, Christianity crossed class and cultural boundaries: slaves and nobles, Jews and Gentiles, men and women belonged to one community — extremely rare among ancient religions. Cambridge classicist MacMullen found Christian communities more socially diverse than any other contemporary religious group. Crucially, early Christianity's core message was not moral philosophy or mystical experience but a specific historical claim: Jesus rose from the dead. Paul in 1 Corinthians 15:3-8 lists living resurrection witnesses available for verification. Stark acknowledges social factors explain growth mechanisms but cannot explain the driving force. The most reasonable explanation: early Christians truly believed they witnessed something supernatural, and this belief gave them world-changing power. Even Gibbon, though critical of Christianity, acknowledged its triumph as 'one of history's most important and surprising revolutions.'
