First, let's examine the disciples' performance during Jesus' arrest and crucifixion. The Gospels record that when Jesus was arrested in Gethsemane, "all the disciples deserted him and fled" (Mark 14:50). Though Peter followed to the high priest's courtyard, he denied any association with Jesus three times (Mark 14:66-72). Even days after Jesus' death, the disciples remained behind "locked doors for fear of the Jews" (John 20:19). These records depict a group of thoroughly discouraged, fearful, hopeless people. However, within weeks, we see a completely different picture. At Pentecost, Peter boldly preached Jesus' resurrection before crowds in Jerusalem (Acts 2:14-36). It provides powerful testimony to the historical reality of Christian faith.
